Is my rent increase legal?

Many cities have policies regarding rent increase limits, requirements, and exemptions to whom they may apply.  Some other rental units have similar protections under state law. However, there are a few general rules. 

1. Verbal rent increases are not valid.

2. Valid rent increases should be in writing and include required legal language. 

3. Generally, your landlord should not be able to increase your rent if you are in the middle of a lease term, like in the middle of a 12-month lease.

4. You should generally receive at least a 30 days’ notice of a rent increase. A 90 days’ notice is required if the landlord tries to raise the rent by more than 10%.
